Dead!
"But... SHE CAN'T BE DEAD," my hand hovered near my throat, and tears blurred my vision. "She's too young." I flew up the stairs to her hospital room, and jerked to a sudden halt once I saw her bed, her EMPTY bed. I felt my face whiten and drain, and my chest became an empty chamber echoing with tiny beats. A combination of shock and pity numbed my feet, my brain, and even my eyes. Gone was the Amazon fighting girl. Only a child after all; a helpless child. Gone was the friend who used to sooth my pain in spite of her own suffering and torment. I moved around, catching sight of her surgical mask, her Styrofoam bowl, her white bandanna, and her medicine that used to tire her out.
All night I have sat in a corner in her room, my rejection hissing within my soul. Why should somebody so young and so loved die, while so many who were useless lived on and on? Fate was a harsh, blind, and cruel reaper with little respect for who was loved and needed.
When the dawn came, I stood up, touched her bandanna, patted her pillow, and put a rose on her bed, with my heart carrying a promise to a memory: "Dear friend, I am so much in love with life that I can't let go. Not yet. Not without a fight."
Day or night. Winter or summer. Rain... or no rain. I've always loved it in here. The nature that strokes me with warm breezes, filling me with a sense of security. The flakes of daylight that seem like a shy lover's kiss on the cheek. The rainbow colours dipped in the cherished mud.
I inhale the showers of pure light and smile. Finally, I am Home. I still enjoy sipping my delicious coffee at Khan El Khalili's, watching intimate faces pass me by. My mind is engraved with thousands of them.
A loud boom! At first, everyone at the cafe, hesitantly, looked at each other with questions on their lips. Another loud explosion followed. The earth shuddered beneath us, then everything turned black, and the ground was swept from under our feet. Shrieking with horror, we plunged into deep, featureless darkness.
I opened my eyes, I don't know after how long, to the full darkness of the ruins. I smelt blood and death. The place was shrouded in hollow silence before a creak of wood was heard. My heart hammered! In the pitch darkness I heard a fading breath next to me, then a sudden howl of pain. It wasn't mine. And yet, a stabbing pain shot through my side causing me to scream. I gasped for breath while tears welled in my eyes. I am buried alive!
Whispering prayers coming to my ears and the word "God " triggered a flood of memories. Images of loved ones filled my head, flowing like the blood that gushed out of my heart . I navigated through the memory, and only love I saw. I returned a little girl , time-confused, sitting in a boat on the Nile, smiling under the sun.
"We're here. We'll save you." The sound of rescue team hung like an echo strayed in the darkness that captivated us. And while all senses began to fade away, the feel of the warm sun on my face remained, drawing me on to where I belong.

* * *

Each time I open the box the scent of music fills my veins. Then I see her, poised en pointe and wrapped in a tiny dress, ready to dance to Chopin’s prelude. Each time the music is turned on she begins to move so angelically with it. She trembles at first, but she manages to do all the right things. As if music dictates her moves. As if she is its (voice).
Each time my heart stands still, and I think of myself. I think of us. Aren’t we all ballet dancers? Each time, like a flower, she opens up to life. She – so believingly – opens her glistening eyes with love and hope. She never gives them up, even if she withers and dies eventually. Oh, she looks real to me! As if someone so heartless kept her dancing with frozen features!
Each time she lets down her shields and allows herself to be vulnerable again. She dances, and allows trust and faith to dance in her heart. A believer she is. Believing that, despite everything, whatever happens is for the best. I see beads trickling down her marble cheeks, but she keeps the smile on through and through.
This time the last strains of music fade away. The dance is over. I head for the dark draperies and open them. As if on cue, rays of light invade the room, and clouds of sadness ebb away. I rise my eyes up and sway to the silent music of Nature, tossing wishes to the heavens, for both of us. Now, another sun finds me smiling. There is hope for me. And perhaps, one day, with some miracle, there is hope for her too.
